In a nutshell: A mid-range multimedia-centric smartphone, with above-par camera and
music capabilities, and decent battery talktime.
√ Symbian Series 60 smartphone, providing ample scope for customizing the device by adding applications, themes, etc.
√ 2 megapixel camera (with flash) provides excellent quality photos (for a camera phone). Stereo FM, mp3 support should keep the music-buffs happy.
√ Good battery life and as with all things Nokia, excellent call and messaging abilities.
X Memory card expandable to 1GB only.
X Camera cover made of flimsy plastic, quite susceptible to damage.
X Video recording at 15 fps pales in comparison to the Motorola L9’s 30 fps.
X User Interface is not as responsive as that of other s60 phones such as the 6630.
X No miniUSB port for connectivity unlike in similar priced 6300.
X Non-standard battery charger.
Price: Rs 7,500/- ( Mumbai, May 2008 )
The box pack contains:
1. The Nokia N72 with battery and user manuals.
2. Nokia PC Suite CD for connectivity to a computer.
3. Headphones.
4. Battery Charger
5. A 128 MB memory card (expandable upto 1GB).
Form Factor
1. Candybar, feels slightly bulky at 125 grams.
2. The device is available in black, plum and pink colours.
3. Well built keypad which takes minimal getting used to.
4. Replacing the memory card doesn’t require dismantling the phone.
5. It’s recommended to use a crystal case to protect the phone from shocks and to prevent fingerprints smudging the device.
User Interface
1. Symbian Series 60 2nd edition OS: interface is a little slow.
2. Ability to install applications and themes to customize the device. However, this makes the phone susceptible to viruses, necessitating usage of good anti-virus programs.
3. A note about the memory card: It isn’t the standard microSD card that’s used in most digital cameras and other devices. It’s a MMC, so be sure to pick the right one while upgrading!
Connectivity
1. EDGE and GPRS support for internet access. NO 3G support and NO infrared support.
2. A major dampener is the lack of support for Wi-Fi networks, which is expected from smartphones.
3. Bluetooth support. However, care must be taken to protect against virii.
Multimedia
1. The 2 megapixel camera has a CMOS flash and provides excellent quality pictures for day-to-day use. It is protected by a black sliding cover, which, sadly, doesn’t seem to be of durable quality. A dampener, is the lack of autofocus in the camera.
2. The music capabilities of the phone are quite adequate: stereo FM and mp3 support with loud volume are welcome features to this end.
Conclusion
For it’s price, the device certainly boasts of a commendable feature set. Phones within the similar price bracket include the Nokia 6300 and 6233, which suffer from a dated s40 OS. The Motorola L9, while offering similar or better multimedia features, suffers from the lack of ability to install customized applications.
Overall, highly recommended to users seeking a sub-10k phone with excellent multimedia features.
